Coalescence

Inspired by the process by which alabaster is formed, this piece is an exploration of transparency and fragility.

A white alabaster form is balanced on a stainless steel rod above a charred oak base. The alabaster contains hollows that, at their thinest, allow the light to pass through. There are approximately twenty voids and twelve 'bubbles' escaping from the surface. The sculpture is photographed against a dark background with a light source behind.
